Emily and I knew we wanted to take a cooking class on our Barcelona trip.  We found Cook and Taste and scheduled it for our last full day in Barcelona.  Looking back, because we had a comprehensive tour of La Boqueria as part of the class, we should have scheduled it for earlier in our trip.  La Boqueria is a bit overwhelming, and it would have been great to have our bearings earlier instead of just stumbling on Pinotxo Bar and not venturing much further. 🙂

The class was a good size – about 15 of us – and we met some other great English-speaking tourists, including the lovely Vita from Australia who accompanied us to Parc Guell after our class. (Nothing like seeing some Gaudi while primed with wine, but that’s another story.)

The classroom at that time was in a walk-up building just off the center of the Ramblas.  We met at the class headquarters, then headed to La Boqueria to pick up our fresh ingredients.  Our instructor showed us the lay of the land and introduced us to vendors who gave us samples, including some amazing Serrano ham from Jordi.  We then ventured back to the kitchen to cook.  On our class day, the sun was shining and we got to overlook the crowds on the Ramblas during breaks from our cooking.  Our menu consisted of gazpacho, seafood paella, tortilla and crema catalana with fresh figs.  Each person worked on at least part of one dish and we all had a serving of each dish to end the class.  Wine was provided throughout the class and our meal and we each took home copies of the recipes.  I highly recommend this casual, easy class for anyone wanting to familiarize themselves with Barcelona and Spanish cuisine.  It’s basic and no real knife or cooking skills are required – just an appetite for food and fun.  And wine. 🙂
