Poke has ruined me from all other sushi in my neighborhood, and yes, I’ve been to Sushi Seki. 🙂 The sushi is so fresh and the specialty rolls are, delicate, beautifully presented and purely flavorful. Poke is as far from gimmicky as you can get, its really more about the freshness of the food than anything else. I’ve been to Poke enough times to order without even looking at the menu, so here are my favorites: the Manhattan roll, Truffle roll, Dynamite roll, Golden Dragon and Red Dragon (really all of the dragons are good). The red snapper sushi is clean and buttery – a must. The rock shrimp tempura is so different from most places that smother the shrimp in a too-sweet glaze. Instead, it’s covered in the lightest of snappy batter with a bright citrus dipping sauce on the side. Yum.
It’s BYOB (which in my mind is a huge bonus!) and cash only, so come prepared. But if you forget the wine or sake, never fear. There’s a tremendous liquor store right on the corner of 85th and 1st. If you’re going during prime time on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday, prepare to wait. The staff is usually willing to take your phone number and call you if you want to wait – and by wait, I mean drink – at Ryan’s Daughter across the street.
